ABOUT THITHING, GIVING AND STEWARDSHIP
The principles of God’s word in regards to giving are set forth in
theses passages: “Honor the Lord with thy substance, and with the first
fruits of all thine increase: so shall thy barns be filled with plenty…”
(Proverbs 3:9,10). “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts
20:35). “The Silver and gold are mine, said the Lord” (Haggai 2:8).
“But
this I say, he which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he
which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully” (2 Corinthians
9:16).
Who should give?
Every man shall give as he/she able according
to (Deuteronomy 16:17). Paul writes to the church at Corinth saying,
“Upon the First day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store
as God hath prospered him; that there may be no gatherings when I come”
(1 Corinthians 16:2). The word of God depicts that the church was not
to depend upon collection but upon systematic offerings for its support.
How much should be given?
According to the law which God gave
to the Jews found in the Old Testament (Leviticus 27:30) the tithe
should be given (a tenth part) of the land, whether of the seed of the
land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord’s: it is holy unto the
Lord. The prophet of God asserts that a tenth of our increase is
required and a sacrificial offering. He challenges us to trust God by
proving Him through our actions. The difference between giving and not
giving to the Lord is the difference of obedience and disobedience.
(Malachi 3:10)
When it should be given?
Giving is
associated with worship and (Corinthians 16:2) sets forth that we must
prepare to give at the first day of the week which indicates that giving
is sacred. In Malachi chapter 3 the command is given to “bring ye the
tithe into the store house, that there may be meat in mine house.” The
scripture depicts the urgent need to make giving a part of our
stewardship thus making our offering to God Holy.
To whom it should be given?
The
law in the Old Testament was “the tenth shall be Holy unto the Lord.”
All offerings is unto the Lord. The prophet of God accused those of
robbing The Lord who withheld the tithe and offering (Malachi 3:8).
Tithe and offerings are used to meet the expense of the house of God.
The Gospel as recorded in Luke chapter 16 teaches us that the fidelity
with which we discharge our duty as stewards of God in making our
offerings to His work, is a test of our spiritual relationship with God.
